But what really made him quit the movie from the set of the 2017 film?

From CinemaBlend reports, Release the Snyder Cut book writer Sean O'Connell shares a piece from his interview with Zack Snyder about the director's cut.

Snyder revealed the story behind his leaving from the making of the Justice League Theatrical version in 2017, stating that "there was no energy to fight with the studio".
Check his full statement below:

"I just was kind of done with it. I was in this place of [knowing] my family needs me more than this bullshit, and I just need to honor them and do the best I can to heal that world. I had no energy to fight [the studio], and fight for [the movie]. Literally, zero energy for that. I really think that’s the main thing. I think there’s a different world where I stayed and kind of tried. And I’m sure I could have . . . because every movie is a fight, right? I was used to that. But I just did not have the [energy]. There was no fight in me. I had been beaten by what was going on in my life and I just didn’t want to, I didn’t care to . . . that was kind of where I was."

Snyder suffered tremendous losses during Justice League production, and if he felt he wasn't doing his best, he'd be wise to step down. He had to do what was best for his mental fans.

Zack Snyder paid $70 million extra to complete his SnyderCut movie from Warner Bros. A Few months ago, Justice League some cast went for an extra shoot. The Movie will be going to be Four long instead of four hours mini-series.
Possible, chances are that Justice League Zack Snyder will actually be his last project for the DC. The director himself points in an interview that he has no plans to continue in DCEU.
Zack Snyder's Justice League will premiere on HBO Max in March.
